3 Real Examples of Influencing Google's AI Overviews

I help tech, B2B, and professional services firms fill their pipeline with qualified leads. I've done search and social media marketing for almost 2 decades — first as a consultant for brands like Tiffany's, Facebook, and McKesson. Then in-house leading Content & SEO at HomeLight and Kickoff.

Here are 3 times our clients got into Google's AI Overviews, what it did for them, and why it mattered.

1. A competitor comparison page

We wanted to control how our client was compared with its competitors. We published an in-depth, RFP-style landing page on their site comparing them with their top competitors.

A few days later, if you searched the client's brand versus a competitor, Google was pulling from our page and using our preferred language in the AI Overview. That showed us we could influence what Google said about the client.

2. Original survey research

We work with a client that does custom printing on clothing and apparel, and we wanted to influence the conversation around the best t-shirt brands. We ran a big survey on how people think about their t-shirts.

After we published it, a search for best t-shirt brands brought up an AI Overview that cited a data point from our survey, with a link to it. It didn't stay long, but the original research influenced that query for a time.

3. A personal loans content program

For a client in personal loans, we'd built a lot of content over time and worked to get the press and the client's partner sites to cite and mention it.

For a short but very lucrative window, a search for loans on Google (a huge keyword for this client) showed a link to the client's landing page inside the AI Overview. Their traffic shot up for about 3 days. Then the AI Overview reshuffled and they lost the spot.

Why it matters

These examples show you can influence AI Overviews, and there are real benefits when you do. You can win more clicks, shape the narrative against your competitors, and show you're a credible source.
